| How often do I get food?
At the beginning of each week I send out an email to all garden members stating 1) what type of work needs to be done in the gardens this week, 2) which gardens we are focusing on this week 3) what food we are currently harvesting Those who work in the gardens must RSVP, and may choose when they work, based on the weekly schedule. The more you work in the garden, the more food you receive. If someone never works in the gardens, they won't receive much food. Think of me like an "Air Traffic Controler". I can see who is helping us and how much. When the harvest starts coming in, those who are helping or have been helping, will always receive first priority to the food. How do I go about getting it?In my weekly emails sent to garden members I will state when and where the harvest is located (always at one of our gardens) and when it will be distributed. It will always be distributed during our work hours. The Holladay Gardens will be first to produce the harvest. Do I pick up a basket weekly? Not unless you have paid $350/season to be one of the non-labor garden members. Then when we have a harvest, I will find out which garden you are closest to and make sure you get a basket weekly. Do I get a random selection of what is ripe?Yes Does someone prepare a basket of food for me to pick up?We can do that if you are a non-labor Garden Member who has paid the $350/season. For the working members, think of us as a private free "farmers market". Only members who have been working in the gardens receive produce that they like and may take only the produce they want. Everyone will get food, but if there is extra of any one type of produce after it has been distributed, then members who want more, may take more. We've learned in the past that some hard working garden members don't want any produce, others want a little and some would like a lot. Some members only want certain types of produce, but if there is a demand on one type of food i.e. tomatoes for example, we make sure everyone gets plenty of tomatoes before any members take more than their fare share. When we have extra food and not enough members who want it, I send out an email to members and let them know we still have extra and explain where and when to pick it up. Also, we sell some of our extra produce at Farmer's Markets around the valley and use that money to buy more seeds and produce that we don't have. We also barter with other farmers to get produce we want. Do you pick it up from the closest gardens or is there a central meeting spot?In my weekly email to garden members, I'll notify you of which garden location our produce will be at. I encourage members to get to know other members, who qualify to receive food, who live in the same area so a designated member can be the one picking up food for others in their area. In our garden group, members work with each other a lot and get to know those who live near them so they can easily network with each other. We'll make sure our non-labor members get to know garden members in their area as well. |
